In our pursuit of a simple yet fulfilling life, serendipity led us to cross paths with Jim back in 2010. Jim reached out with a proposition that resonated deeply with our values—an opportunity to collaborate on programs aimed at making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Dr. James Bender, the visionary founder of the Adriatic Maritime Institute (AMI), has dedicated his life's work to preserving maritime heritage while leveraging traditional watercraft as a transformative platform for youth development. The mission of AMI struck a chord with us, particularly the focus on supporting children facing challenges in integrating into their local communities. Often, these children, under state care, lack the social capital and support networks necessary for healthy growth and development.
Our involvement in AMI's programs goes beyond mere participation; it is a commitment to providing resources, expertise, and guidance to empower these children to embrace life's adventures. By offering kayaks, logistical support, and experienced guides, we facilitate unforgettable experiences of sea kayaking—an activity that not only fosters physical health but also cultivates resilience, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment.

The institute's initiatives span a diverse range of projects, including boat-building endeavors where children learn valuable skills and craftsmanship. Notably, AMI spearheaded the restoration of a traditional Falkuša boat dating back to 1937—a testament to their dedication to preserving maritime heritage.
One of the most memorable experiences facilitated by AMI is the "watermelon voyage," during which children embark on a journey along the picturesque Croatian coastline aboard a traditional boat selling watermelons picked in Neretva Valley. This unique adventure not only exposes them to the beauty of their surroundings but also instills a sense of pride and connection to their maritime heritage.
